Phantom Africa manuscript and letters, 1951-1960 (bulk 1951-1952).

The collection consists of a typescript English translation of Michel Leiris' L'Afrique fantôme, by Robin Chancellor, with numerous handwritten changes. The work is in the form of a diary, kept by Leiris during the Dakar-Djibuti Ethnographic and Linguistic Expedition, 1931-1933. Also, 21 letters, ca. 1952, between author Leiris, translator Chancellor, and publisher Robert Hale, concerning the possibility of publishing the translation. Also, comparative galley proofs of the manuscript, dated 9 Nov. 1951 and 27 Feb. 1952.

Michel Leiris was born in Paris. He became a vital force in the Surrealist movement, but left the movement in the late 1920s. In addition to his work as a writer, editor, and art historian, Leiris was an active ethnologist and anthropologist, notably in Africa.
